There has been a lot of suspense about this camera and wether it is even possible to live up to the hype that has been spread like wildfire online. Of course on paper it looks amazing. The build, the design, the features, the video capability, the new sensor, the built in OLED EVF (which is super duper uber FANTASTIC), and the tri-navi controls are everything the enthusiast market has ever wanted in a small take anywhere camera. Hell, I suspect the NEX-7 may even create more of us crazy gear heads because even when Uncle Joe sees this camera he is going to want one.

It has a way of making people wonder what the hell you are shooting with, and when they learn about it they seem to want to own one for themselves. This has happened to me three times while out and about shooting with the NEX-7. BUT the real question for me while shooting was to determine if it did indeed live up to the hype and was worth shelling out $1200 for the body alone, which to be fair is $6800 less than a Leica M9-P and you can still mount your favorite Leica, Zeiss ZM and Voigtlander M mount glass on to! Hell, you can mount just about any glass to this NEX-7, which makes it pretty damn special right there.

American sentenced for Afghan murders

Calvin Gibbs is sentenced to life in prison, with parole possible NEW: He remains under investigation for the 2004 shooting death of a family in Iraq Prosecutors: Gibbs’ platoon staged killings of civilians as firefights with TalibanDefense says Gibbs’ accusers were high on hashish at the time

Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington (CNN) — Army Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs has been sentenced to life in military prison with eligibility for parole in 10 years.

A military court-martial Thursday found Gibbs guilty of murdering three Afghan civilians, illegally cutting off pieces of their corpses to keep as “souvenirs” and planting weapons to make the men appear as if they were Taliban fighters killed in legitimate firefights.

He was reduced in rank to private and ordered to forfeit all pay and benefits. Whatever sentence Gibbs serves will be reduced by the 547 days he has already spent in prison.

“He said they were all dirty savages,” prosecutor Maj. Andre Leblanc said at Gibbs’ sentencing hearing.

“He is the savage, not the innocent Afghans he murdered. It is monstrous. What kind of savagery does it take to do this? To cut a finger off a victim and show it to people? This is a savage being”

Gibbs’ attorney, Phillip Stackhouse, had asked the court for a sentence of life with parole so Gibbs would have the opportunity to be with his now-3-year-old son again.

“He has a long time to reflect on his life, what he has done and what he wants to do in the future,” Stackhouse said.

Gibbs is the highest ranking of five soldiers charged with being part of a rogue “kill squad” that targeted civilians. Another seven soldiers also were charged with lesser crimes including abusing drugs, keeping “off the books” weapons and intimidating a fellow soldier not to speak out against the platoon’s alleged killings.

Gibbs had pleaded not guilty.

A prosecutor described Gibbs as a “recruiting poster” soldier. But the tall, clean-cut Gibbs and the “kill squad” he was convicted of leading turned into a public-relations nightmare for the military.

“Sgt. Gibbs had a charisma, he had a ‘follow me’ personality,” Maj. Robert Stelle, a prosecutor in the case, told the court in closing arguments Wednesday. “But it was all a bunch of crap, he had his own mission: murder and depravity.”

The murders Gibbs is accused of committing took place over a period of five months last year, while Gibbs led the 3rd Platoon of the Army¹s 5th Stryker Brigade in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

Selling a fake engagement as a real engagement, that’s what they were doing
Maj. Robert Stelle, prosecutor

Gibbs’ platoon was tasked with patrolling small villages in the area to build relationships with an Afghan population wary of the U.S. presence in their country. Instead, prosecutors said Gibbs and a small group of rogue soldiers allegedly plotted to murder civilians and then planted weapons on them so they appeared to be Taliban attackers.

“Selling a fake engagement as a real engagement, that’s what they were doing,” Stelle told the court.

In court testimony, Gibbs said he did not execute anyone. Prosecutors said Gibbs participated in the killings of three unarmed civilians: two farmers and a village cleric.

Gibbs said he killed one of the men, but he claimed it was in self-defense. However, the staff sergeant admitted to ripping and cutting off fingers of all three men he was charged with killing. He kept the body parts, he said, to give to soldiers he favored or to intimidate soldiers he disliked.

“I was numb to the situation,” Gibbs told the court about why he had taken the body parts. “I wasn’t thinking; it’s sickening. I am embarrassed.”

Gibbs also admitted to posing for photos with bodies against military regulations.

“People wanted to prove they were there,” Gibbs replied when asked by his attorney why the soldiers took the photos. The Army later apologized after the photos were leaked to the press.

Gibbs appeared shocked after the verdict was read, and his wife, Army Spec. Chelsy Gibbs, began to cry. According to court records, she filed for divorce from Staff Sgt. Gibbs in August and asked for custody of their toddler son.

The panel of three officers and two enlisted soldiers started deliberating in a military courtroom near Tacoma shortly before 10 a.m. (1 p.m. ET) and returned its verdict around 3 p.m. (6 p.m. ET).

Phillip Stackhouse, Gibbs’ defense attorney, had argued other soldiers were framing his client. Three soldiers pleaded guilty to the killings and agreed to testify against Gibbs as part of plea deals.

“What if there is no hard evidence other than what you have heard from that witness stand?” Stackhouse said Wednesday. Some witnesses also admitted to smoking hashish they obtained from Afghan translators. Their testimony, Stackhouse said, “came under a cloud of hash.”

Stackhouse argued Gibbs wasn’t where other witnesses said he was during the engagements. And, according to Stackhouse, in February 2010 Gibbs couldn’t have smuggled an AK-47 in his backpack into a village where prosecutors said he then planted the assault rifle on the body of an Afghan man he had killed. Grasping an AK-47, Stackhouse showed the rifle would not fully fit into a soldier’s backpack.

Prosecutors countered that Gibbs had used a model of the rifle that has a shorter muzzle and could be concealed.

Gibbs remains under investigation for the 2004 shooting death of a family in Iraq during his tour there, Army spokesman Maj. Chris Ophardt told CNN Thursday. The investigation into the family’s killing had been closed but was reopened after Gibbs was charged with the murders of civilians in Afghanistan.

During testimony last week, Gibbs said he shot at a car that failed to stop at a checkpoint in Iraq that he was manning.

Inside the bullet-riddled car, Gibbs testified, were not combatants but an unarmed Iraqi family. Gibbs admitted in court that he told his troops in Afghanistan about the Iraq shooting as an example that soldiers would not face consequences for acting aggressively, even if civilians were hurt.

“If they are put in a tight situation, don’t not pull the trigger,” Gibbs said he advised members of his platoon in Afghanistan. “You won’t go to jail for it.”

Exhibition celebrates Obama’s mom’s work

Honolulu, Hawaii (CNN) — In her own right, Ann Dunham, the mother of U.S. President Barack Obama, lived an accomplished, international life that began in white-bread Kansas, weaved through Asia-light Hawaii and wound up in Indonesia.

Now an exhibition celebrating her life in the world’s most populous Muslim nation is opening in Hawaii featuring her personal art and artifact collection.

Across the east-west palette, Dunham’s family and friends paint her as an ardent anthropologist, early maven of microfinance and a cultured, curious explorer.

Her daughter, Maya Soetoro-Ng, proudly wrote of her mother’s anthropological work in Surviving Against the Odds: Village Industry in Indonesia, a book based on Dunham’s original dissertation from the early 1990s.

“She had so much respect for the communities where she conducted her research. Always logical and rigorous, our mother’s scholarship was made truly meaningful by the fact that she loved the people she wrote about and hoped others would hear their song.”

Alice Dewey was one of Dunham’s first mentors to help compose that tune. Now Professor Emeritus at the University of Hawaii Manoa, she served as Dunham’s anthropology adviser in the 1970s. She remembers their connection as an instant match.

“I want her!” recalls Dewey after seeing Dunham’s resume on her work in Indonesia.

As it turned out, the pair shared a distinct passion for local Indonesian markets and wares on the central island of Java. As a student herself, Dewey had studied local Javanese markets in the 1950s. Dunham would later extend those studies from the markets to the makers of woven bamboo baskets, tie-dyed batiks and open-fired iron blades.

In a testament to her topical thirst, Dunham pitched Dewey a very broad research plan.

“When she submitted her research proposal to me she wanted to focus on not just one — but five — areas of Indonesian trade: batik, bamboo, ceramics, shadow puppetry and blacksmithing.”

Dewey forced her to choose one. Dunham settled on blacksmithing, the craft of firing and bending hot iron into such things as knives and cooking utensils.

“But she got us back with a 1,000-page dissertation. The norm was about 300 to 500.”

Bron Solyom describes her friendship with Dunham as a bond forged through blacksmithing. Now curator of special collections at the University of Hawaii Library, she and Dunham met as fellow graduate student in the 1970s.

“We had this common, strong interest. Ann saw blacksmithing from an economic aspect — in how people made a non-agrarian living. And she built up this body of knowledge that was really remarkable.”

And Dunham’s desire to learn seemed to be unflappable — even in the face of danger.

Solyom recounted the story of when the two were working in Bali in the early 1990s. After checking in to one hotel, Dunham “was gone for ages” while Solyom waited in the lobby.

She was just calm about things — and forever curious.
Ann Dunhom’s friend Bron Solyom

When Dunham finally emerged she apologized saying she had had to evict a green — and likely poisonous — snake from her room. But before she did that, she had done a photo shoot as the serpent swayed to itself in the mirror.

“She was just calm about things — and forever curious,” remembered Solyom.

That insatiable curiosity also led to copious note-taking — some of which is just being found.

Dewey recently opened up an old trunk in her home and saw the name “Dunham” written inside. Daunted at the thought of poring over more work from her former student, she says she quickly shut the lid and has not opened it since.

According to her daughter, most of Dunham’s notes and other personal effects — those known and those rediscovered — will find a final home in the archives of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. by next year.

Besides the obvious field notes Dunham left behind, Soetoro-Ng adds that something more intangible is something she thinks of often.

“I do think about her delight. In one photo, her eyes are shut and she’s just really letting go with some of her staff and colleagues. That was overlooked at times and in the years since she passed away I’ve been burdened with the sadness of missing her — and she died so young. And even though she didn’t succeed in marriage and longevity there are many ways her life is a model of success that we can aspire to.”

In 1995, just before her 53rd birthday, Ann Dunham died after a short battle with ovarian cancer. In traditional Hawaiian fashion, her ashes were scattered into the waters of the islands. A pre-presidential Obama and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng performed the honors.

Dewey says Dunham’s life poetically concluded the way she lived it “traveling forever around the world,” a fitting final journey for an explorer who lived between the east and west for much of her life.

Through Her Eyes: S. Ann Dunham’s Fieldwork in Indonesia runs through January 8, 2012 at the East-West Center Gallery, University of Hawaii Manoa. It includes photographs taken during Ann Dunham’s years of field research in Indonesia as well as personal artifacts which include examples of metal smithing, jewelry and basketry made in the villages of Indonesia. Dunham’s personal art and artifact collection has been augmented by recent purchases to give wider context to her work in Indonesia.

18 dead after tractor runs into canal in Nepal

The people were traveling to take part in a Hindu festivalThe dead include a 12-year-old boy, officials sayPolice say it’s possible the driver fell asleep

Kathmandu, Nepal (CNN) — At least 18 people were killed Thursday in southern Nepal when a tractor carrying them to a religious festival overturned into an irrigation canal, police said.

“They could not come out of the canal because the overturned tractor was on top of them,” police officer Bidur Khanal said from Sunsari district, the site of the accident, about 400 km southeast of Kathmandu.

The people were traveling in an open trailer being pulled by a tractor, images from the scene show.

The victims include a 12-year-old boy, 16 women and one man, Khanal said.

Another 23 people were injured, he said. They managed to get out of the canal because they were not trapped under the tractor, he explained.

Five of the injured were hospitalized in serious condition, Khanal said.

It’s possible the cause of the accident may have been the driver falling asleep, Khanal said, because he had been driving all night.

The pilgrims had left Dhanusha district, about 150 km away from the accident site, and were driving on a road along the canal to get to Baharachetra in Sunsari district, where people were celebrating the final day of a four-day Hindu festival.

Passenger bus accidents in the mountains of Nepal are common because of poor roads, old vehicles, reckless driving and overcrowding, but accidents in southern Nepal, like the one Thursday, are not common.

Olympus put on watch for delisting

A customer looks at the Olympus booth at a camera shop in Tokyo on November 10.A customer looks at the Olympus booth at a camera shop in Tokyo on November 10.Olympus has been put on watch for a possible delisting from the Tokyo Stock ExchangeThis is due to a scandal involving more than $1bn in acquisition-related paymentsOlympus must produce its earnings report by December 14 or face an automatic delistingSuch a move would probably see shareholders wiped out and could prompt lawsuits

(Financial Times) — Olympus has been put on watch for a possible delisting from the Tokyo Stock Exchange after saying on Thursday that it would not meet a deadline to submit earnings.

The company, which this week acknowledged wrongdoing for the first time in a scandal involving more than $1bn in acquisition-related payments, had already delayed its earnings release and faced a mandated deadline of November 14.

Olympus now has until December 14 to produce its earnings report for the six months to September 30 or face an automatic delisting. Such a move would probably see shareholders wiped out and could prompt lawsuits to recoup their losses.

The Nikkei reports that Olympus lenders such as Sumitomo Mitsubishi Banking Corp are planning to meet the group as early as next week to negotiate more security over their loans due to the possible delisting.

Olympus shares fell by their daily limit on Thursday on delisting fears and Japanese press reports that the police are investigating the group.

Shares closed at Y484 and have fallen about 80 per cent since Olympus dismissed chief executive Michael Woodford after he questioned acquisition payments.

Japanese newspapers reported that police had requested documents from Olympus related to the acquisitions and that Financial Services Agency regulators and the TSE were questioning company executives.

If authorities find that Olympus falsified statements or auditors refused to sign off on its earnings the TSE can put the company on a separate supervisory watch while deliberating whether or not to delist it. Alternatives include demanding the submission and execution of a business improvement plan or payment of a fine.

“The TSE would have to strike a balance between the effect on the market, shareholders and public opinion on Olympus,” said Hiroyuki Kamano, a lawyer specialising in corporate governance at Kamano Sogo Law Office.

In the event of a delisting, Mr Kamano said shareholders would have to sell all their holdings to determine the size of their losses before filing lawsuits.

Olympus said on Tuesday it had used four acquisitions completed in 2008 as cover to dispose of losses it had been hiding since the 1990s.

About $1.4bn was diverted through the deals, but it has not disclosed their size or origin or how it was able to disguise them for so long.

Southeastern Asset Management, which owns 5 per cent of Olympus, has called for an emergency meeting to start the process of replacing the board.

Josh Shores, analyst and principal at Southeastern argues that delisting would be punitive for the company rather than the individuals responsible for placing Olympus in this mess.

“At this point Olympus still has a good business, but we are starting to see how this could impact the medical operations,” said Josh Shores, an analyst and principal at Southeastern.

Obama pushes trans-Pacific trade deal

Leaders agree on the outline of a trans-Pacific trade agreementThe deal is expected to be finalized in the coming year, Obama saysThe president is in Hawaii for a weekend Asian-Pacific economic conferenceHe is on a 9-day trip that will also take him to Australia and Indonesia

Honolulu (CNN) — President Barack Obama, in Hawaii for a weekend economic conference, said Saturday that leaders of nine nations have agreed on the “broad outlines” of a trans-Pacific free trade agreement.

The United States has been negotiating with Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Vietnam, Chile and Peru to develop the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which officials have said could eventually expand to include other nations.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Honolulu, Obama pushed the expanded trade deal as a way to help boost investment and exports, create jobs, and “compete and win in the markets of the future.”

The president is on a nine-day trip through the Asia-Pacific region that will include stops in Australia and Indonesia.

“I’m very pleased to announce that our nine nations have reached the broad outlines of an agreement. There are still plenty of details to work out, but we are confident that we can do so. So we’ve directed our teams to finalize this agreement in the coming year. It is an ambitious goal, but we are optimistic that we can get it done,” he said, according to remarks provided by his office.

The next round of negotiations is scheduled for early next month.

Obama said the TPP has the potential to be a model for future trade agreements elsewhere in the world, as it will address issues not covered in previous pacts. It will ensure that state-owned enterprises compete fairly with private companies and address trade and investment in digital technologies.

Obama’s administration is taking care to highlight the importance of strong Asia-Pacific relations to the president’s efforts to create jobs domestically.

“The U.S. exports to this region are essential to the president’s goal of doubling U.S. exports in the next several years,” Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, told reporters in a briefing this week. “In fact, nearly all of the efforts that we’re going to be making towards that export goal take place in this part of the world.”

The 21 members of APEC account for 55% of the world’s gross domestic product, 43% of world trade and 58% of U.S. exports, according to the group.

“So I think when the American people see the president traveling in the Asia-Pacific, they will see him advocating for U.S. jobs and U.S. businesses,” Rhodes said. “He will be trying to open new markets, and he will be trying to achieve new export initiatives, and he will be trying to foster a trade agreement through the, for instance, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, that takes us beyond the Korea Free Trade Agreement towards a multilateral agreement that, again, has very high standards to ensure that our interests are being protected.”

During the weekend conference, Obama was also scheduled to have a discussion with business leaders, as well as side meetings with Russian President Dimitry Medvedev and Chinese President Hu Jintao. Obama met with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda on Saturday.

After a break Monday for a political fundraiser, Obama is scheduled to depart Tuesday for Australia and later Bali, Indonesia, where he will stress the U.S. role in the Asia-Pacific region and seek to reassure U.S. allies of the nation’s continued commitment to the region, Rhodes said.

Speaking to business leaders on Saturday, the president addressed the need to campaign aggressively on behalf of the United States to boost business.

“We’ve been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades. We’ve kind of taken for granted — well, people will want to come here and we aren’t out there hungry, selling America and trying to attract new business into America,” he said. “We can do much better than we’re doing right now.”

Football: Late Iraq goal dashes 10-man China

Younis Mahmoud celebrates the only goal of the match as Iraq beat China 1-0 in World Cup qualifyingYounis Mahmoud celebrates the only goal of the match as Iraq beat China 1-0 in World Cup qualifyingIraq score last-gasp winner to beat China 1-0 in World Cup qualifyingJapan, Uzbekistan and Jordan clinch places in second round of Asia qualifyingCongo DR score fine 3-1 win over Swaziland in African first round qualifier Argentina booed off field after being held 1-1 by Bolivia in South America group

(CNN) — Iraq scored in injury time Friday to beat 10-man China 1-0 and all but end their opponent’s hopes of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup finals.

The Asia Group A match in Doha was a mirror image of the side’s earlier clash in China a month ago, with Younis Mahmoud, who scored the only goal in Shenzhen, coming up trumps again in injury time.

China were handicapped by a red card for Zhang Linpeng and paid for missed chances.

Iraq, coached by former Brazil legend Zico, have moved into a strong position in the qualifying section, which is led by Jordan, who confirmed their place in the second stage by beating Singapore 2-0.

Jose Camacho’s China would have to win their final two games and see Iraq lose by a heavy margin to Jordan and Singapore to claim an unlikely second in the group.

We knew China would attack, so we focused on defending in the first half before sealing victory late on
Zico

“China played bravely, but we won the match and the result has almost guaranteed our place in the last ten,” Zico told the official FIFA website.

“The game went as we predicted. We knew China would attack, so we focused on defending in the first half before sealing victory late on.”

Japan and Uzbekistan joined Jordan in clinching qualification Friday, continuing their domination of Group C.

Japan routed Tajikistan 4-0 and Uzbekistan beat North Korea 1-0 with Timur Kapadze scoring the only goal of the match for the hosts.

The big surprise of the day was the 1-0 defeat for Group D leaders Australia in Oman with Amad Ali scoring the winner in the 18th minute.

Australia will still be expected to progress after four earlier wins, with Frank Rijkaard’s Saudi Arabia moving into second in the group after a 3-0 win over Thailand.

In Group B, South Korea stayed top by beating the UAE 2-0 and Mahmoud El Ali grabbed the only goal of the game as Lebanon shocked hosts Kuwait 1-0 to move into second.

Iran held on to top spot in Group E but needed an injury-time equalizer from Mojtaba Jabari to scramble a 1-1 draw in Bahrain.

Iran lead Qatar, who recorded a 4-0 home win over Indonesia, on goal difference.

In the first round of African qualifying, the outstanding result Friday was 3-1 win for the Congo DR in Swaziland with Togo held 1-1 in Guinea Bissau. Totttenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor is set to return for Togo in the second leg next Tuesday.

A star-studded Argentina side were held to a disappointing 1-1 home draw by Bolivia in their third match of qualifying from South America.

Argentina, boasting the likes of Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain, found the visitors hard to break down and even fell behind as Martins Moreno scored in the second half.

It needed an equalizer from Ezequiel Lavezzi to salvage a point, with Argentina booed from the field.

Pacquiao beats Marquez by decision

Pacquiao beats Marquez to keep titleIt’s the second time Pacquiao has defeated MarquezHis win fuels speculation that he will finally face Floyd Mayweather Jr.

(CNN) — Manny Pacquiao defended his WBO welterweight title at the sold-out MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, defeating Juan Manuel Marquez by majority decision.

Both fighters went toe-to-toe throughout the 12-round fight Saturday night with neither getting knocked down on the canvas.

The fight went down to the Nevada judges’ scorecards with Dave Moretti scoring it 115-113, Robert Hoyle 114-114 and Glenn Trowbridge 116-112.

After the decision, Marquez left the ring, apparently upset by the ruling.

This was the third clash between Pacquiao and Marquez. The first bout in 2004 was scored a draw, while Pacquiao won a controversial split decision in the rematch four years later.

SI: Crash Course: Pacquiao vs. Marquez III

In prior meetings, Pacquiao scored four knockdowns yet Marquez won the greater number of rounds.

To further stoke the fire between the fighters, in the days leading up to Saturday’s fight, Marquez sported a T-shirt saying, “Marquez beat Pacquiao twice!!”

Pacquiao, who entered the bout having won 10 titles at eight weight divisions, is considered arguably the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer.

Pacquiao opens wallet, heart to those in need

Now that Pacquiao has defeated Marquez, the next big fight most boxing fans are eagerly waiting for is a potential multimillion-dollar payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr., the other superstar of his boxing generation.

Both fighters have openly said they want to face each other, but each time they try to consummate the fight, negotiations break down over blood and urine testing.

2 policemen killed in Afghan attack

Suicide bombers attacked a government office in Paktia provinceThree blew themselves up; two others engaged in a firefightAfghan forces had NATO air support

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) — Three Afghan policemen were killed Thursday in an attack on a government office in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktia province.

Five attackers wearing vests laden with explosives stormed into the Samkanai District administrator’s office where a meeting of tribal elders was ongoing Thursday afternoon, said Rohullah Samoon, a spokesman for the Patkia province governor’s office.

Three of the attackers blew themselves up at the entrance, Samoon said. The other two engaged in a fierce gun battle with Afghan security forces backed by NATO air support.

The shooting went on for an hour before the two attackers were killed, Samoon said. Two policemen were injured, among them the chief of police, he said.

Earlier this week in neighboring Paktika province, between 60 and 70 insurgents were killed after they attacked an Afghan base in Barmal district.

NATO provided air support to Afghan National Security Forces in that incident as well.

TomTom 1.8 (for iPhone)

TomTom 1.8 (for iPhone) - TomTom’s iPhone app ($59.99, direct), now at version 1.8, continues to offer highly accurate navigation and the most informative display on the market. The company has added some new features, including HD traffic and celebrity voice packs, although both of these are extra-cost in-app purchases. The competition—notably Magellan—has caught up in many ways. But TomTom for iPhone’s excellent, new HD traffic plug-in alone ensures that the app retains its Editors’ Choice status.

User Interface, POI Search, and Map Graphics
TomTom 1.8 is a 1.32GB download. It’s technically compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, but you’ll want a device with an actual GPS chip for proper navigation accuracy. For this review, I tested TomTom 1.8 U.S.A. and Canada on an Apple iPhone 4 on Verizon’s network, running iOS 4.2.8.

The app boots quickly to a main menu that mostly contains toggles for various settings, such as muting the voice prompts or switching to night colors (which also happens automatically if you want). The button you need is Navigate To, which is at the top. Tap it, and you’ll see options for navigating to your home, favorites, recent destinations, specific street addresses, and so on. You can also navigate directly to contact addresses, geotagged photo locations, coordinates, or points on a map as well.

For the most part, keying in street addresses was simple. As with most other GPS apps aside from TeleNav, you input the city first, followed by the street name, and then the street number. The type-ahead feature tries to figure out what you want, although it wasn’t quite as fast or responsive as Magellan RoadMate 2.0 ($59.99, 4 stars). Searching for POIs is also standard fare. However, TomTom’s POI database isn’t the greatest, at least where I live in northeastern Massachusetts, and that also holds true for the iPhone app. Often, I’d run a POI search near me for the specific name of a store, get nowhere, and then find it via the Google Local Search feature. That’s fine, I suppose, but it’s a fragmented experience; Magellan RoadMate 2.0 offers smoother, more detailed POI searches, while the 22-million-entry database in the Telenav GPS Plus (for iPhone) (free, 3 stars) is the largest out there.

Once on the road, though, TomTom 1.8 really shines. It works just like the company’s standalone devices—a good thing, since the iPhone version is even faster to respond to key presses, at least on the iPhone 4. TomTom still leads in displaying route information. You get all manner of data across the bottom of the screen, all of which updates in real-time. The main display shows the current street, the next turn off, how far away it is, your current speed, the speed limit of the current road, and the estimated time remaining, distance remaining, and estimated arrival time. The 3D maps still look slightly drab, and don’t animate as smoothly as Magellan’s revamped RoadMate 2.0 app, but they’re very readable.

One annoyance: clearing a route takes three taps on three separate screens, which is at least two too many. TeleNav, by contrast, offers a clear “End Trip” button at the bottom right at all times. That makes it easy to end navigation if you’re looking for a parking spot near your destination, or decide mid-route that you no longer need guidance. The latter is a common occurrence if you’re coming back from a new place and need navigation just to get to a major highway, at which point you know the rest of the way home.

Routing Performance, Traffic, and Conclusions
In a series of route tests, TomTom 1.8 performed exactly as expected, which is to say exceptionally well. The company’s IQ Routes feature adapts estimated arrival times and matches them to real-world data collected from drivers. Combined with daily Map Share updates, which you can download right from the phone (see slideshow), TomTom’s app is arguably more “plugged in” to current road conditions than the competition. You also get 3D lane assistance views, which help with complex highway interchanges and look sharp to boot, especially on the iPhone 4′s higher-resolution display.

Voice prompts were clear, crisp, and loud—or rather, as loud as can be given the iPhone 4′s small speaker. They were also well timed, and the app pronounced street names correctly in almost all cases. TomTom 1.8 includes several dozen voices in roughly two dozen languages; most don’t say street names, but a few do. You can also purchase celebrity voices for the app via an in-app purchase; Homer Simpson is available for $5.99, but I didn’t see any other choices during the review period. (Doh!)

The app worked perfectly with iOS 4 multitasking; during one test, I could listen to music, run the app, and even take a hands-free call at the same time. The app manages volume levels appropriately in each case, including muting the music for a call, or turning down the music momentarily for voice guidance.

The HD traffic plug-in deserves special mention. It puts up a bar on the right side of the screen that represents traffic conditions for your route along the way. This works similar to the company’s latest higher-end standalone devices, such as the TomTom GO LIVE 2535 M ($349, 4 stars). In practice, it’s stellar; the traffic readouts update very frequently, and always accurately reported what was ahead—even on secondary routes, which was a nice surprise. In one particular case, it insisted I exit a normally empty highway earlier than usual; as I thought, “nah, let me ignore it and see what happens,” right past the exit, I saw brake lights as everyone ahead came to a stop. I exited just in time. The only downside: HD traffic is an in-app purchase that costs an extra $19.99 per year.

All told, TomTom 1.8 remains the best iPhone GPS app on the market. Magellan RoadMate 2.0 runs a close second; it offers a smoother interface for running POI searches and entering addresses, and it’s also arguably a bit more attractive. But Magellan’s real-time traffic reporting isn’t nearly as granular, and Magellan’s routing is occasionally quirky compared to TomTom’s more direct navigation. TeleNav has seen the writing on the wall, and has drastically reduced the price of its own GPS app; it’s still a bit rough around the edges, though, and doesn’t offer as much route data during navigation.
