TomTom 1.8 (for iPhone) - TomTom’s iPhone app ($59.99, direct), now at version 1.8, continues to offer highly accurate navigation and the most informative display on the market. The company has added some new features, including HD traffic and celebrity voice packs, although both of these are extra-cost in-app purchases. The competition—notably Magellan—has caught up in many ways. But TomTom for iPhone’s excellent, new HD traffic plug-in alone ensures that the app retains its Editors’ Choice status.
User Interface, POI Search, and Map Graphics
TomTom 1.8 is a 1.32GB download. It’s technically compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, but you’ll want a device with an actual GPS chip for proper navigation accuracy. For this review, I tested TomTom 1.8 U.S.A. and Canada on an Apple iPhone 4 on Verizon’s network, running iOS 4.2.8.
The app boots quickly to a main menu that mostly contains toggles for various settings, such as muting the voice prompts or switching to night colors (which also happens automatically if you want). The button you need is Navigate To, which is at the top. Tap it, and you’ll see options for navigating to your home, favorites, recent destinations, specific street addresses, and so on. You can also navigate directly to contact addresses, geotagged photo locations, coordinates, or points on a map as well.
For the most part, keying in street addresses was simple. As with most other GPS apps aside from TeleNav, you input the city first, followed by the street name, and then the street number. The type-ahead feature tries to figure out what you want, although it wasn’t quite as fast or responsive as Magellan RoadMate 2.0 ($59.99, 4 stars). Searching for POIs is also standard fare. However, TomTom’s POI database isn’t the greatest, at least where I live in northeastern Massachusetts, and that also holds true for the iPhone app. Often, I’d run a POI search near me for the specific name of a store, get nowhere, and then find it via the Google Local Search feature. That’s fine, I suppose, but it’s a fragmented experience; Magellan RoadMate 2.0 offers smoother, more detailed POI searches, while the 22-million-entry database in the Telenav GPS Plus (for iPhone) (free, 3 stars) is the largest out there.
Once on the road, though, TomTom 1.8 really shines. It works just like the company’s standalone devices—a good thing, since the iPhone version is even faster to respond to key presses, at least on the iPhone 4. TomTom still leads in displaying route information. You get all manner of data across the bottom of the screen, all of which updates in real-time. The main display shows the current street, the next turn off, how far away it is, your current speed, the speed limit of the current road, and the estimated time remaining, distance remaining, and estimated arrival time. The 3D maps still look slightly drab, and don’t animate as smoothly as Magellan’s revamped RoadMate 2.0 app, but they’re very readable.
One annoyance: clearing a route takes three taps on three separate screens, which is at least two too many. TeleNav, by contrast, offers a clear “End Trip” button at the bottom right at all times. That makes it easy to end navigation if you’re looking for a parking spot near your destination, or decide mid-route that you no longer need guidance. The latter is a common occurrence if you’re coming back from a new place and need navigation just to get to a major highway, at which point you know the rest of the way home.
Routing Performance, Traffic, and Conclusions
In a series of route tests, TomTom 1.8 performed exactly as expected, which is to say exceptionally well. The company’s IQ Routes feature adapts estimated arrival times and matches them to real-world data collected from drivers. Combined with daily Map Share updates, which you can download right from the phone (see slideshow), TomTom’s app is arguably more “plugged in” to current road conditions than the competition. You also get 3D lane assistance views, which help with complex highway interchanges and look sharp to boot, especially on the iPhone 4′s higher-resolution display.
Voice prompts were clear, crisp, and loud—or rather, as loud as can be given the iPhone 4′s small speaker. They were also well timed, and the app pronounced street names correctly in almost all cases. TomTom 1.8 includes several dozen voices in roughly two dozen languages; most don’t say street names, but a few do. You can also purchase celebrity voices for the app via an in-app purchase; Homer Simpson is available for $5.99, but I didn’t see any other choices during the review period. (Doh!)
The app worked perfectly with iOS 4 multitasking; during one test, I could listen to music, run the app, and even take a hands-free call at the same time. The app manages volume levels appropriately in each case, including muting the music for a call, or turning down the music momentarily for voice guidance.
The HD traffic plug-in deserves special mention. It puts up a bar on the right side of the screen that represents traffic conditions for your route along the way. This works similar to the company’s latest higher-end standalone devices, such as the TomTom GO LIVE 2535 M ($349, 4 stars). In practice, it’s stellar; the traffic readouts update very frequently, and always accurately reported what was ahead—even on secondary routes, which was a nice surprise. In one particular case, it insisted I exit a normally empty highway earlier than usual; as I thought, “nah, let me ignore it and see what happens,” right past the exit, I saw brake lights as everyone ahead came to a stop. I exited just in time. The only downside: HD traffic is an in-app purchase that costs an extra $19.99 per year.
All told, TomTom 1.8 remains the best iPhone GPS app on the market. Magellan RoadMate 2.0 runs a close second; it offers a smoother interface for running POI searches and entering addresses, and it’s also arguably a bit more attractive. But Magellan’s real-time traffic reporting isn’t nearly as granular, and Magellan’s routing is occasionally quirky compared to TomTom’s more direct navigation. TeleNav has seen the writing on the wall, and has drastically reduced the price of its own GPS app; it’s still a bit rough around the edges, though, and doesn’t offer as much route data during navigation.
